I once hired a salesperson who wasn’t the sharpest tool in the shed, but was a lovely fellow, with a good track record in sales on paper.
In his interview, I told him that we had a weekly WIP every Monday morning, and he asked me why we get whipped every Monday morning. I thought he was joking at first until I had to clarify that WIP stood for work in progress.
As he joined in on his first WIP the following Monday, I introduced him to the team and introduced his concept of the letter H being added to the word WIP.
By adding his letter “H”, to WIP, we got to WHIP — Work Happily In Progress.
That “H” now stood for how you move through what you do.
Not just what you achieve, but the energy you bring to it.
The “H” is habit, humour, heart.
It’s the how you show up in the middle of the mess.
