"Until you value yourself, you won't value your time. Until you value your time, you won't do anything with it"
M.Scott Peck - 1936 - 2005 - Day 362 of 2024 : 4 remain
Morgan Scott Peck was an American psychiatrist and author, best known for his influential self-help book, The Road Less Traveled, published in 1978.
The above quote comes from this book and is one of my favourite self-motivators for not wasting time.
Peck’s approach often focused on personal growth, the nature of love, and the importance of taking responsibility for one's actions.
Where across the course of your day today, could you consider where it might be that you weigh up your concept of deservedness against your concept of time?
When I am focused on getting the job done, I ask myself aloud “Do you deserve the results that your efforts will bring DL?”
The answer is always yes, so I get cracking.
My brother Kevin had a dinner party conversation starter: “What’s the best advice you give that you don’t take yourself?”
My best advice comes from conversations with clients, when I ask them a question as to whether they might consider a particular course of action.
Then afterwards, I’ll think, that’s a great suggestion. I think I will apply it to my situation.
I have advised clients to ask others if they might consider a course of action, rather than tell them what to do, in order to help someone help themselves. So, I turned this advice inward.
Where across the course of your day today, could you consider where it might be that you ask questions of yourself to find the answers that you seek?
In The Road Less Travelled, M.Scott Peck explores themes of discipline, love, spiritual development and personal responsibility in taking ownership of one’s life choices, which are essential for mental and emotional health.
The book opens with the famous line: "Life is difficult."
I often ask people if they have ever read the biography of a successful person that opens with the line, “Well, it was all pretty easy, really.”
Life is tough, and unless you take stock of time and how much value you place on your use of time, you will be driving as though you have your handbrake on.
Where across the course of your day today, could you consider setting aside time to spend with the most interesting and important person in your life?
I block time out in my calendar every single day, entitled “ME TIME.”
I send calendar access to clients so they can book time in my calendar. If they can’t find a time that suits them and within my “ME TIME”, I am prepared to spend that time with them, then as my choice, I book them in.
Most of the time, “ME TIME” is spent on self-care, learning or just lying in the sun, but it is never wasted.
While you’re thinking about that, think about this and have a Gr8 day!
Be well.
